December 4-5, 2006

Our journey began by us waking up at 3:00 am to pack the van in preparation for the trip for our flight to Beijing. Mike graciously agreed to drive us in, and we made it to the airport with plenty of time to spare. Thank you Uncle Mike!!!!

Because we are spending two days in Beijing prior to meeting with our travel group, our travel arrangement were made very quickly and we knew that our seats to San Francisco and then to Beijing were separated throughout the plane. Thankfully, a very helpful United agent spent considerable time reassigning most of seats together.

We made it through security quickly and before we knew it we were at the gate waiting for the plane. A great chance to relax and get our Starbucks fix. Our flight to San Francisco went off without a hitch. We then had to quickly connect to the international flight to Beijing, which meant a more lengthy security process. We made to the gate without incident, where they were already in the process of loading. We settled in for the twelve hour flight, got out the laptop, iPods, and snacks. Tucker and Jonah got seats together with Tammy and I behind and Phil in the same row but on the opposite side.

The flight was smooth and we were well taken care of. We were served a good lunch and dinner with multiple snacks and drinks in between. 12 hours, 5 movies, and 4 Pepsi’s later, we arrived in Beijing.

We quickly made it through baggage and customs, and met Tom our agency guide at the airport Starbucks. No time for coffee though. We had to quickly hit the road and wade through the evening commute and drive the 15 miles from the airport to the hotel.

It was an interesting drive to the hotel. We quickly found out that the horn is the universal tool on the road. Even the bicycles have horns and bells that are constantly being used. After arriving at the hotel, we went to Pizza Hut that was actually attached to the hotel. The pizza was some of the best we’ve ever had and there were two or three servers that helped us constantly.

We’re finally in Beijing heading to Jinglun Hotel

After dinner, Phil and Tim hit the back road markets for some late night shopping. We found some bottled water, and were able to buy a case, which worked out to about $.30 each.

Tomorrow we meet with Tom in the morning and spend the day touring the Forbidden City, Summer Palace and Tian An Men Square, followed by an Acrobatic Show in the evening.

Thank you so much for all your prayers. We can’t wait until Sunday when we receive Grace!!!
