I was thinking about this update, and what things to highlight
from the past 3 months. I have to say that I don’t have much…
which is wonderful! Life has really calmed down and settled into
a great normal. That’s not to say that life isn’t still busy.
Trust me it is! And she is still 3! For a whole year apparently!
Why can’t there be some ages that go faster, and other, more
blissful ages that last longer? Oh well =) All joking aside, we
are loving a lot of things about her age right now, but we can’t
wait for her to listen better… or at all! Please tell me she
will… someday?! But the bottom line is that we don’t feel like
we’re sinking anymore! Praise God! I can actually usually get us
to our destinations on time, if not early, again. I truly can’t
stand being late for things, so I’m glad to be more consistent
with that… as is our prosthetist, therapist, etc…
The only real main event over the past 3 months has been getting
Leah’s leg just right. Her test socket, which is technically
just temporary, was fantastic! She walked and ran so well in it,
usually with barely a limp, if any at all. Its purpose is to
make sure the mold the prosthetist made is going to work, and
then he makes the final socket based on that. That being said,
the final socket is made a little differently and with different
material. The first final socket did not work at all. She just
did not walk well in it, and she couldn’t really run either. She
would start and it would turn into a hop, skip thing. So our
wonderful prosthetist, after taking time to come to a therapy
appointment to troubleshoot with her therapist, went back and
made a new final socket. In the meantime, she just used the test
socket, which could end up being the final socket if nothing
worked better. The only main issue with it was that it was a
tiny bit longer than her left leg, which makes a difference when
doing steps and some other things. But still, not necessarily a
deal breaker. Cosmetically speaking it wasn’t the best (it’s not
meant to be) because it was white and had a square ankle. But
that honestly was not that big of a deal to me because she did
so well in it. But last week we tried the second final socket on
her and she did amazingly well! Barely a limp. And the run was
as good as the test socket. No hop, skip thing going on. Yeah!
So we should be good to go with this one. No prosthesis will be
perfect, but this new one seems to be the best option over the
test socket. So now that you heard way more than you ever wanted
to about sockets for a prosthesis… I’m done! You’re welcome!
We will post one last update in June to mark our first full year
home with our Asian Princess!!! There are times I can’t believe
it will be a year already, and other times that I can’t believe
it’s only been a year. She has blended so seamlessly into our
lives, and we are truly blessed to call her daughter ~ sister! |
