Trip to China
All Days  |  Previous Day  |  Next Day

Monday, January 22, 2007

Today we took the oath for US Citizenship with Chloe at the US Consulate in Guangzhou. Upon arrival at the Consulate, it became another unbelievable experience when we were told that a group of US diplomats were in China and wanted to take part in the oath.

The group included Karen Hughes, United States Under Secretary for Public Affairs reporting directly to President Bush, the US Ambassador to China, and Michelle Kwan, the figure skating champion, whose father was born in Guangzhou.

It seemed like a couple hundred parents and Chinese children crowded the room. Ms. Hughes took the microphone and in a smooth Texas accent, she told a nice story about how President Bush told her once that after you have a child, being a parent becomes your most important priority in life. Then she asked us to hold up our right hands and she gave us the oath. It was unreal.
