GUANGZHOU DAY TWO

Well, it’s our first full day in Guangzhou and it’s been as full as all the others. It is almost 11 p.m. here and Zoe has been playing for the last 2 hours as we try to get her to bed. She’s finishing the last of the 3 – 4 oz bottles and that seems to be doing the trick, but that’s what I thought about the 2nd of the 3 – 4 oz bottles! She seems to be asleep though, finally!

Let me respond first to Sofia. Yes, she is now saying “Bye Bye”, “Ma Ma” and “Da Da”. She also said “Mom” today. We are now working on “Hello.” She loves to be hugged so I think you’ll be able to hug her. Watch out for your toys though as she definitely likes bright colored new toys.

Zoe has opened up to Steve the last two days and the morning started out with Steve taking Zoe out of the crib. Steve started the morning feeding, but could only get down 2 ounces before Mom had to complete the feeding. Zoe did let Daddy dress her (don’t worry, Mom picked out the outfit.) and it took a lot longer than usual as we played quite a bit with the picture on the wall, standing up and the clothes she eventually wore.

Then it was off to breakfast at the White Swan. Wow, the number of adoptive parents and babies here is quite amazing. The food was much better this morning and Zoe had porridge, cheerios, eggs, some noodles, banana and watermelon (which she has taken to sucking the juice out of and spitting the rest out on whoever the lucky person feeding her happens to be.) She also liked the yogurt and drank it from a straw at the end of breakfast. The White Swan is beautiful with a waterfall and fish pond that Zoe spent quite a lot of time staring into this morning. She also liked looking at the other babies and older children.

Next we went to get her medical exam – a serious of questions; temperature, height and weight; heart and skin check; and ears, nose and throat exam. She weathered everything quite well except she didn’t like having her right ear examined. All the tests were normal and that was the day for Amy and Zoe as far as the adoption went; Steve filled out some additional paperwork in the afternoon.

After the exam, shopping seemed to be the big topic of discussion. We went back to the hotel to change rooms (originally they had us in a king smoking and yesterday we switched to 2 twin bed nonsmoking because they didn’t have a king nonsmoking available until today.) and threw everything back into our suitcases and a grocery bag. The room we are in now is spectacular and has great views of the Pearl River. While Zoe slept, we did some work on the computer as Amy eagerly wanted Zoe to wake so that her shopping time could be maximized. So around 4:30 p.m. Amy went shopping with Zoe while Steve did paperwork and brought Zoe back to the hotel in squeaky shoes (for those of you not familiar, they are shoes that have a squeaky device in the heels so that every time she takes a step, the shoes squeak. This is to help teach them to walk.)

Dinner at a Cantonese restaurant was at 6 p.m. The food was great, although there were a couple of dishes that some people in our group didn’t care for much: Pigeon (yes, it tastes a lot like chicken) and a whole fish (fish eyes and all). As dinner was winding down, I started to play with Zoe and she really enjoyed her squeaky shoes. Then Amy took Steve and Zoe both shopping after dinner. Let’s just say that there was quite a bit of purchasing happening as everything appears so inexpensive. I’m afraid there will be lots of shopping done in the next several days including the purchase of at least one more suitcase to haul everything in.

Back at the hotel Zoe appeared to have been sleepy while we were out and about, but she definitely woke up in the hotel room. Two hours of playing and she was still going strong; she’s finally gone to sleep. And so has mom…

All in all it was a very good day. Steve and Zoe were able to play, change clothes, feed Zoe, and pick her up without her screaming. All definite improvements. Tomorrow we’ll go to a Temple to get the children blessed. Until then, enjoy today’s photos.
