Trip to China
All Days  |  Previous Day  |  Next Day

Saturday, May 31, 2014

Hello from the Amazon! Okay we're not in the Amazon, but it sure does feel like it with the heat and humidity. We had another busy day. We toured the Buddhist Temple and an art museum. We witnessed Chinese people worshipping Buddha. They come twice a month and bring gifts such as peanut oil, fruit, and personal belongings to be blessed. During worship today a woman dropped a coin. A boy from our group picked it up for her and she scolded him. Our guide explained that she was flipping the coin for Buddha and she wanted to see if it was heads or tails. (The boy looked startled) Sammy also noticed a nazi sign on a Buddha. Our guide explained that it wasn't a nazi sign, but rather a symbol that represented peace and hitler stole it from Buddha and changed it at a 40 degree angle. Even though it was so hot, they were serving hot tea at the Temple. The Chinese people believe that warm drinks cool the body. I was day dreaming of ice cream, not hot tea. After the Temple we went to the art museum. It was just too hot to enjoy the artwork. We bought a few gifts and sat in the shade. Qian fanned herself and said, "hot."

This afternoon we went swimming. Qian didn't want me to hold her. She kept pushing me away in her float. We swam for 3 1/2 hours today and I'm sure we will do a lot more in the coming days. After swimming we went to the mall. We had to take the underground tunnel to cross the street. Sam gave me a hard time. He wanted to play flogger across the street. No way! There was too much traffic and pedestrians don't have the right away. We walked a long wet tunnel and I fell down the last two slippery steps. My butt, legs, and hands were covered with black grime from the floor. When we made it to the other side, we discovered the stores were closed! We tried to make our way back, but got lost. The underground tunnel has arrows pointing in many directions. After several attempts to locate our hotel, we spotted some Americans and they pointed us in the right direction - thank goodness! Qian was hot and Sam was grossed to by a cockroach. Tomorrow is Children's Day. I can't wait to share this holiday with Qian and Sam.

Good night from Guangzhou,
Betty, Sam, and Qian
