Our Journey

My heart never left China and that’s where our story continues. Three summers ago I visited Jiali’s orphanage. I can still picture the guarded gate, paths that led to buildings that housed the disabled and orphaned children. I can vividly see the finger paints taped on the chipped walls outside of Jiali’s classroom. Of course, I remember Mama and Baba Lu and our unforgettable goodbye. But most of all, I remember the faces. I cannot forget the faces! The face of a young boy with facial deformities whose brown eyes twinkled as he peered up at me through his bi-focal glasses. The face of a boy with Down’s syndrome who held Jiali’s hand and wouldn’t let go. The face of a girl wearing a pretty pink dress who cried as Jiali hugged her and said goodbye, and the face of a teenage boy who greeted me with a warm smile. These faces forever changed my life and one sweet face (Jiali’s) changed Eric’s!

And so...three years later, I sat at my kitchen table and once again looked at faces of waiting children from around the world. Jiali peered over my shoulder and pointed to a round face with piercing brown eyes and said, “I like her.” I clicked the file and there she was, our future daughter – so beautiful in her plaid jacket. It was love at first sight. Her little fingers wrapped the playground pole and her melancholy expression told a story beyond her years. Her name was Qian, age four, on China’s Special Needs waiting list and she was assigned to FTIA, our old adoption agency. The next day, I called and requested her file. We learned that Qian is from Anhui, the same province as Jiali and just two hours from Heifi. Our agency received many calls from families wanting to view Qian’s file, but she was ours. From the moment we saw Qian’s face, we knew she was destined to be our child.

After ten long months of waiting, we can’t wait to share our journey to Qian with you…Perhaps you will see a face that will forever change your life.

Redthreadchina delivered fruit to Qian’s orphanage.
Look at those beautiful faces!
