Happy Birthday Bart! Today has been incredible day
with Ella. She is showing us her adorable personality. She loves
to laugh and play games. She loves to have books read to her and
color in her coloring books. She has been so much fun to be
around. This morning as we left for breakfast, Ella grabbed
Bart’s hand and then turned to me and took my hand as we walked
down the hall of our hotel. She had a huge smile on her face as
we walked hand in hand to breakfast. I am not sure if you have
noticed, but Ella is big-she is what the Chinese call a “Budda”
baby. As soon as we got off the elevator to go to breakfast, she
smelled the food and pointed in the direction of the food and
started dragging Bart and I down the hall towards the smell.
Bart and I were cracking up. After breakfast, we met our group
to return to the Civil Affairs Office to complete the adoption
paperwork. As much as Ella has warmed up to us, I was nervous to
go back to place that Ella was given to us, especially since she
was going to be seeing her nanny again. We got to the office and
Ella did not want to have anything to do with her nanny. Her
nanny came over to talk to Ella. Ella looked at her with the
same frightened look that she had the day before with me. This
time I think Ella was thinking that she did not want to go back
to the orphanage with her nanny. Ella grabbed my hand and would
not make eye contact with the nanny. I was so relieved. We went
on to spend the morning “swearing” to the Chinese government
that we would not “abandon or harm” and would “love and take
care of Ella.” Ella was officially adopted today-she is legally
ours in the eyes of the Chinese and US Governments. Ella is
taking her afternoon nap right now. This evening we are going
out to dinner and to do a little shopping.
