Today we started with breakfast as normal. We met a few couples
that had flown in last night and their Gotcha Day was today!
We’re looking forward to seeing the new little ones at breakfast
tomorrow! Afterwards, we needed to go back to the room to wait
for our guide to call us and let us know that it was time to go
back to the medical clinic to have Leah’s TB test read. It had
barely left a mark, so I wasn’t even remotely worried. I am
worried about her passing the test in the states though! There
are many, probably more than 1/2, but I don’t know for sure, who
test positive once they’re home. Luckily in most of those cases
the chest x-ray is clear, but they still need to go through 9
months of medication. So we are praying now for that. While we
were there to have her test read, another couple in our travel
group was there for their daughter, Emma’s shots. They had been
trying to have them (7!) waived until they could get home and
have their doctor make the call as far as what she could handle
and in what time frame. Emma has a respiratory condition, and
has not had any vaccinations from the orphanage because of it.
They hadn’t wanted to risk what it might do. Unfortunately, when
I left the clinic, it looked like she was going to have to get 6
of the shots. We are praying that they will not affect her
negatively at all!
We then walked to Starbucks for lunch. I hadn’t been in there
yet, and it was very similar to ours. I bought a travel mug that
says China Starbucks, and we got sandwiches, that the girls
really enjoyed. I got a Black Sesame Green Tea Frappuccino! I’m
assuming that that is an Asian flavor, but who knows… maybe you
have it back home too. It was really good! If you go to
Starbucks.com, you can select China as the location, and it’s
the drink they feature on the home page. Then we went back for a
nap before we were going to head out for more shopping in the
afternoon. The girls were just not cooperating for naptime
though, which is fine. They have been sleeping really well
almost every day for nap. So we got out the punching balloons
and had some fun!
We met our travel group for some shopping in the Pearl Market.
On the way, we saw all kinds of interesting things in the herbal
market… dried fish stomach for one! We saw so many shops,
selling so many things. We bought 3 pairs of pearl dangle
earrings, 3 girls swimsuits, about 15 DVD’s (about $1.50 each),
and a backpack. While we were shopping, there was a
thunderstorm. It was only the second rain we have seen, and the
first was at night when we were sleeping. Our last stop before
going back for dinner was planned since we first got to
Guangzhou. Four people in our group had wanted to try scorpion.
Aron, Sarah and Chad (a couple in our group), and… Kyra! She had
said from the day we got here that she wanted to, and my girl
did just that! She never once waivered from her decision… even
after we saw them live and crawling around in huge bowls earlier
in the shopping day. They had them (the small ones) skewered
(whole) in threes. Aron ate the first one off the skewer, and
then Kyra ate the last two. And she would have eaten more! I was
so proud of her!!! She earned some major cool points! She had
also tried a small yak chew in Xining last week. She didn’t chew
it for very long, but enough that she can say she tried yak!
We went to a Thai restaurant for dinner… yummy! And then unwound
and got the girls ready for bed. I am excited to report that
Leah is getting much more comfortable with us, and actually
wants me to rub her head at bedtime! I have to say… love it! And
the other day she had wanted some kisses, but didn’t want to act
like she did, so she kept telling me she had boo boos on her
face to get me to kiss them. The poor girl had boo boos on her
nose, her cheeks, her forehead, her lips, her chin… all over! I
thought that was pretty cute… and clever! |
