We're Home

December 18, 2007

Ok, we got the hint. You want updates.

Things are going well for the “Foster Four”. We cannot believe it has been one month since we met the girls for the first time. The way things are going you would think we have been together forever.

The girls have adjusted very well. They have met 90% of our friends and family. We appreciate everyone giving us “space” the first few days. We enjoy our family time together because it seems the past month has been a blur. Although things are going well, we do still need a lot of alone time so the girls know we are their parents and providers (besides, we like spending time with them too).

You probably wonder what we have been up to since we came home. First, were the illnesses. All of us became ill either on the flight home or at home. Rett caught what Tony had a few days after arriving home, but everyone is doing well now.

The girls have had tons of “firsts”. First car seat ride (hated it initially, now they sleep almost immediately after getting in the car), first snow (Laney LuMei hates snow), first wagon ride around the neighborhood (loved it), first brushing of the teeth (ok with it), first time seeing Santa (from a distance, no way they would sit on his lap, Laney now says Ho Ho Ho when she sees him), first night sleeping past 6:00 am (we wish every night was this way), first time to church (Abby LuLa slept, Laney LuMei did very well), first US hair cuts (both did very well, thanks Jill), first studio portraits (Abby hated it), first time destroying a pastor’s office (sorry Pastor Greg) and many more other things we cannot count.

The first question we get is “how are they adjusting?” The second question seems to always be “do they know any English and do they understand you?” The answer is YES! They are picking up words every single day. They seem to understand us about 90% of the time. Another question is “do they speak Chinese?” The answer is we don’t know. Since we do not speak Chinese, we could not tell you what they are saying in their toddler gibberish. We’re excited because they are putting words together to make simple phrases.

Some examples include:

Good girl (their favorite)

Kyler Jo (our dog)

Dog

BaBa at work (BaBa is dad in Chinese)
Please (so cute when they say it and scrunch their noses and squint their eyes to say it)

Up please

I love you (it melts our hearts)

Bye Bye

Vroom (for cars)

Pretty _____ (whatever we are talking about, tree, lights, etc…)

Mama’s shoes (or whatever else they say is Mama’s)

In addition to words, they know the signs for many things (more, drink, all done, etc…)

And many more.

They have many likes and dislikes.

They:

Love French Fries

LOVE green beans even more

Love bath time

Abby hates blankets on her

Sometimes they get irritated if Sister is sitting too close

Love water bottles and drinking out of them

Love playing with Mama’s kitchen utensils

Abby hates raisins

All we wanted was the tube in the middle....

Birthday art for Baba

Pretty new jackets... unzipping them is fun....

So tired after watching the Colts win

The girls with Congressman Mike Pence

Wassup?!?!
Love to jump and play hand games (itsy bitsy spider, etc…)

Laney dislikes snow

Love looking at themselves in the mirror

Love to eat

Love teddy grahams (thanks Granny)

Love hats, especially Papa Tony’s knit beanie

Love shoes (Mama is thrilled)

Love talking on the phone

Love when BaBa gets home from work to play

And we could go on and on….

The girls continue to be pretty popular. They met our Congressman, Mike Pence (see photo), Mayor, folks at church and etc. We are stopped almost everywhere we go and so many people have seen this website it is almost a little scary (everyone has been great and have been excited to see the girls in person).

The girls are extremely smart and are learning more and more each day. In fact, just yesterday, they both used the restroom for the first time in the “potty”. They continue to love phones and Tony has them interested in watching monster trucks on TV (pretty cool!). They really do not like cartoons yet, but watch some corny low budget kids’ show on TLC in the mornings. It has lots of singing and dancing and they love anything with music. Their favorite toys are glow worms from Uncle Robby and Aunt Allyson which play music when you press their bellies.

The girls had an appointment at the St. Vincent International Adoption clinic. The appointment went well. The worst part was the blood work, because the nurses could NOT find veins in their tiny little arms. It was horrible. We go back this Friday for the results. Please keep everyone in your prayers.

We cannot believe this is our life now. We are so blessed to have these wonderful little girls. God has given us a huge responsibility raising these sweet little girls, and we are thankful. Every time we look at them we cannot believe how sweet, wonderful, smart, funny and beautiful they are. These are traits their birth parents passed on and we are the lucky ones to experience it all. We pray that they know the girls are loved beyond words.

Thanks again to everyone for their continued support, prayers, meals and more. We will post on this site a couple of more times over the next few months. In the mean time, we will transition back to the original blog.

Thanks for stopping in to check up on us. God is good all the time, all the time God is good!
