So, here I am - the first guest blogger on Grace’s website.
This is nearly the end of my first day being ‘ayi’ (auntie) –
and I’m so exhausted, I’ve even turned down an offer to go to
the hotel tavern! I saw her briefly last night - sleeping- when
I arrived from Shanghai, so this morning was the first time I
met ‘Rong-Rong’ properly. We all had breakfast together and then
spent some time in the hotel playroom where she enjoyed rides on
a rocking horse. After lunch we went to Shamien Island where I
bought her what I’m sure will be the first of many presents – 3
qipaos (traditional Chinese dresses). She’s as gorgeous, cheeky
and clever as she looks in her photos and an absolute delight –
and it’s great being able to talk to her even with my limited
Chinese which she very kindly pretends to understand. She’s
feisty, determined and very independent and seems to love being
in open spaces to walk around and explore. We’ve now had an
evening meal together where she made her presence very much felt
by constantly banging on the table with her spoon and
chopsticks…..! Anyway, it’s been a wonderful first day of this
fantastic journey that Margaret and Mike have embarked on. I now
need to go and get some rest to prepare for more auntie antics
tomorrow…..
Note from Mike – Her Visa arrived today at lunch time
along with a large brown envelope that we have to hand to the
immigration officer in San Francisco. That really important
envelope has to be carried by us and not opened by anyone before
its handed into the immigration officer, if its not sealed when
we get there Grace can’t enter the US and become a US Citizen,
needless to say we are taking great care of the big brown
envelope in case it gets into the hands of an infamous paper
shredder!!! |
