Well it’s day 3 of our “After Grace” era and we’re
exhausted! Tonight was a battle of wills about PJs and bedtime,
so we are beginning to see some classic toddler behavior of
testing boundaries. But again, these are good signs – her
feistiness shows she has character and will power. We are
beginning to learn much more about her eye sight and we believe
that she sees very little, so she has had to show amazing
strength to cope with her young life so far, and she will need
this character trait to continue on. Of course we are hoping
that Dr. Hess will be able to help her a lot, but we admire the
way she literally feels her environment before taking a step. In
the first picture you will see that she is shielding her eyes –
she does that a lot. When our guide asked her why she does that,
she replied that it makes her “comfortable”. We have been told
that all she sees is light, so being outside may be a strain on
her eyes.
Today we had a wonderful start – she woke up happy and all 3 of
us played together before breakfast . Then we had a walk around
the town with Grace firmly strapped in. She was happy but became
sad when she got back to the room – my theory is that she is
missing the company of her friends from the foster home, but
it’s really frustrating not knowing what to say to comfort her.
She had a sleep and then in the afternoon we visited a temple,
about 30 minutes drive from here. It was beautiful but it was
sad knowing that she wasn’t really seeing anything, so we had
our guide Tracy tell her the things we were passing. This
evening we asked Tracy to take us to a local restaurant so that
we could find out what Grace likes to eat – basically
everything!!! Then it was back to the hotel for the battle of
the wills! As I write this she has at last gone to sleep. Each
day will have its ups and downs, and we will take things moment
by moment. We are learning about her and she is learning about
us, may the learning continue!!!
The next post will be on Friday when we arrive in Guangzhou
(used to be called Canton and is near to Hong Kong). Please pray
for Grace as she takes her first flight. In Guangzhou we will
complete all her US immigration and medical procedures.
