Trip to China

Today was a rather uneventful day of touring more Guangzhou hot spots. We headed out for the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall, the Five Goats Statue, and the Guangzhou Orchid Garden. Unfortunately, not many orchids were blooming in the garden, just a handful of popcorn orchids. That reminded us of home. Our admission to this garden did include a cup of tea at a teahouse overlooking a fishpond. The intent was good, as the sign over the entrance called this a garden of civility, but the nice hot tea was just that in 90+ degree weather with 90% humidity.

Lance got the kids down for a nap after we returned to the hotel so the power shopping could begin. It finally dawned on me that we only have another three days to get down to business. We returned to the hotel only after running out of Yuan.

I forgot to mention that Lilia took her first solid food yesterday during the van ride coming back from Yangxi. Appropriately enough, her first food was a couple of Luke’s beloved honey balls. Unfortunately, by bath time last night she had red blotches on her face. We are hoping this is heat rash, not an allergic reaction to honey balls. It would be so not fair if Lilia were allergic to honey balls.

Our group had dinner tonight in another Cantonese restaurant on island. This one is the restaurant with live, fresh dinner selections up front for the choosing. Tonight’s special was sand worms, but the usual water beetles, frogs and snakes were available as well. We tried not to think about our chicken being prepared on the same chopping board as the sand worms.

First stop, Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall.

The three beauties from Yangxi, all born within five days of one another. Lilia is in the middle.

Five goat statue symbolizing Guangzhou.

Final stop of the morning, the Guangzhou Orchid/Botanical Garden.

This was the sign at a rather ordinary section of the orchid garden. Check out the grass behind the sign. No mediocre management here.

Sandworm and water beetles, just two of the live selections at the restaurant we ate dinner at tonight. The restaurant is huge and the food was very good. We haven’t had a bad Cantonese dinner yet.
