Trip to China
All Days  |
Previous Day  |  Next Day

Wednesday, September 5, 2007

We had a leisurely morning as we didn’t have to meet the group until 2:30 p.m. Lilia basically slept through the night, waking up just once around 11 p.m. (which Lance slept through – must have been the two Tsing Tao at dinner). Dolores even made it to the hotel gym for a workout this morning! After breakfast we finally ventured out for Shamian shopping. Today I was bad cop to Dolores’ good cop in regard to price negotiation. She spent money; I did not since we have 10 more days here. The shop people are really smart. They hand Luke toys expecting that he will not give them up, forcing me to buy them. Fortunately we have trained our boy well.

After an early nap, Lilia slowly started coming out of her shell. We got our first official smiles from her and she really enjoyed kisses from Luke.

At 2:30 p.m. the bus took us back to the Civil Affairs office where Cici jumped out to pick up our formal adoption decrees. Cici ran upstairs to get them while the bus drove us around the block in Guangzhou traffic. Adoption decrees in hand, we then traveled to the Public Security Office to apply for our baby’s Chinese passport. Cici worked her magic yet again. Our numbers were called before those of families already waiting when we got there. This is also where Lilia had her first poop. We were so excited, we started taking pictures of this long-anticipated event, then got scoldings since photos are not allowed in this office.

After dinner we attempted giving Lilia a bath in the bathroom sink. This went slightly better than last night. She is still congested with frequent coughing and sneezing, but is ten times better than Monday. In addition, her appetite is slowly increasing. (SF Johnson’s – this is today’s only indirect reference to food)

This is serious stuff. See the glasses on her nose?

It is great to finally see the
real Lilia beginning to emerge.

So sweet. We love our kids.

See where the silver van is heading? This is the alley that gets you to the building entrance.

Our illicit photo of Lilia’s first poopy diaper change (thus the poor quality). Only us kua `aina change diapers out in a public waiting area.

See all the hands? How many Silva’s does it take to bathe a squirming baby? (Answer = 2)
