Hello Everyone,
First of all, thanks for all of the wonderful messages. Sam and
I spent the day soaking in China’s history. We toured Tiananmen
Square, the Forbidden City, a tea house, and attended an acrobat
show. It was a hot, busy day. We were wide awake at 4:00. Sam
worked on his homework from 5:00-6:00 and got a lot
accomplished. We had an early western breakfast. Of course Sam
had to inspect the waffles because they were a little brown.
(Anything ‘brown’ is burnt in his eyes) I reminded him that this
was going to be his best meal of the day, so eat up.
Tiananmen Square was not crowded and we learned that Chairmen
Mao is on display in a crystal casket. The Square opens up into
the Forbidden City. It was given this name because at one time,
the common man/woman was not allowed to enter, only emperors and
high officials. The emperor was the only person allowed to enter
through the large gateway. We also learned that every carved
stone, building, and kettle had a purpose. Location and color
are also important as the Chinese people are superstitious. We
learned that red is a lucky color and is often worn by a bride.
We also learned that yellow is an unlucky, inappropriate color.
There are ‘yellow’ books that display inappropriate pictures of
women, if you get the gist. (Go figure, Sam was wearing all
yellow today) My favorite part of the day was the tea house. We
learned how to make tea and properly hold our cups. It was an
authentic experience. Our last stop of the day was to watch an
acrobat show. Sammy enjoyed seeing eight motorcycles perform
daredevil stunts in a caged area. It was pretty spectacular.
Can’t wait to post our pictures of the Great Wall tomorrow!
Good Night from Beijing –
