YES! We’re home!

First, our apologies for posting this so very, very late. Time is just flying here! It took us a while to get everyone over the jetlag. You know you are dealing with a sleepy six year old when she asks to go to bed at 4 o’clock in the afternoon! It took a little over a week and a half to get back to normal (whatever that is).

It’s been amazing having Louisa home. The changes have been so incredible to witness. Every day brings about more smiles and laughs as she becomes more and more comfortable in her surroundings. We took her to she a doctor who specializes in children who were adopted internationally (she adopted from China three times herself). In a joking manner, she said that we did something very unfair to Louisa – we switched languages on her! Because she isn’t speaking yet (totally normal for her age), it can be difficult to remember that she isn’t used to the English language, and therefore, has absolutely NO IDEA what we are saying to her sometimes! We taught her how to say “more” in sign language and she definitely gives it a workout when the crackers are out. She says “mama” and “dada” and has her own special way of saying “Avery” which sounds something like, “AAAAHHHHHHH!” Also, she absolutely loves our dog, Bo, and takes any opportunity she can get to lay on top of him and give him hugs (and kisses too – ick).

The reception Louisa has received here has been nothing short of spectacular. She has been welcomed with open arms by a community of family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and even total strangers. We can’t thank all of these very special people enough for the support and kindness they have shown to our family. We feel truly, truly blessed to have so many wonderful people in our lives. How’d we get so lucky?

Since we’ve been home, Louisa…

● has become a very steady walker. Thankfully, she hasn’t discovered how to run quite yet.

● has discovered some new foods to love, like spaghetti, baked potatoes, blueberries and her passion – Baby Goldfish Crackers. We also managed to find her favorite Chinese cracker at the local Asian market. Talk about your comfort food!

● mimics us like crazy! From peek-a-boo to hair brushing to blowing raspberries (courtesy of Grandma Evie!), Louisa picks up on everything we do. She even tries to snap and whistle!

● has been growing like a weed. She’s gained almost three pounds! She’s finally starting to fit into her 12 months clothes, although her tiny lower half makes it difficult to keep pants up where they belong. Her hair and nails are growing like crazy. And she’s also getting a new tooth, so that makes nine total!

● has attempted a sippy cup, but still prefers the bottle. We’ll keep working on it…

● has developed some stranger anxiety. This is really good news as far as her bonding and attachment goes. It means that she is recognizing us as her “go-to” people in this world and doesn’t want to lose us. No chance, kiddo!

Look for another update in December. Happy holidays to all!
