Our first full day in China! After the breakfast buffet at the
hotel (where they insisted Aron have soy sauce on his eggs…
Yummy!), we headed out for the Summer Palace. It is so awesome
to us how much history there is here. Our country is so young,
but there are cultures that have been around for 4,000 years! We
had been told that the Chinese would want to touch our girls and
get pictures of them / with them… but we had no idea what that
would truly be like. We weren’t at the palace for very long
before there was a swarm of people around Ryann… picking her up…
making their kids get in pictures with her… getting pictures of
themselves with her… even kissing her cheeks! You would have
thought she was the biggest celebrity. It was fascinating, yet
unnerving that she was being so “handled”! That continued off
and on the whole time we were there. Some also wanted pictures
of Kyra, which she was pretty good about, but it was definitely
more focused on Ryann. I think because they love white children,
and Kyra is almost as tall as a lot of the Chinese adults… so
they probably thought she was much older. Ryann’s blue eyes
didn’t hurt either!
We then went to eat more delicious Chinese food for lunch.
Unfortunately, Kyra had not been feeling too well since
yesterday, and she really needed to go back to the hotel to
rest. While the others went to ride a rickshaw, go to a tea
house, and then an acrobat show, I took the girls back for a
nap. (Ryann had cried to come with Mommy!) We caught up on some
much needed sleep, and woke up when everybody got back to the
hotel. We wanted to stay in for dinner, so Aron got us Pizza
Hut!
The biggest news of the day… Kyra lost a tooth in China! We are
waiting to see if the Tooth Fairy leaves Chinese money! We’ll
let you know tomorrow!
*A few extra thoughts from yesterday:
I felt very rushed writing about our day yesterday, that I
missed a couple of things I had wanted to mention. The first was
to say that we didn’t fly the direction we thought. We flew
north from DC, over the North Pole, the Arctic Ocean, and
Siberia! We thought that was pretty cool. And secondly… the
traffic! We knew it was going to be crazy, but had no idea!
What’s funny is that I feel completely safe, because as
completely insane as it is, it’s almost like a perfectly timed
dance between all of the drivers, bikers, and pedestrians. It’s
definitely something that you couldn’t truly understand or
believe unless you’ve been here. |
