WE ARE HERE IN BEIJING!
Hi everyone. This is a short note
(and sorry, no photos today and no Emma's Corner) to let you all
know we arrived safe and sound to Beijing . For Emma and I, the
trip was a breeze getting here. Many thanks to Vanessa for
suggesting Dragon Air – they were outstanding. And I have to say
that the Beijing Airport is something to behold – it is mammoth,
and I’ve seen a lot of airports. The most interesting things
were: the quarantine check coming off the plane (everyone has
their temperature scanned as they leave the gate area to
determine if they are allowed through or if they need to be
taken into quarantine) and the beautiful silk screen just
randomly placed before the trains to baggage pick up. Gregg’s
flight was not so seamless – an almost 2 hour delay in Newark,
and then a further 1 hour delay going through the quarantine
check for his flight’s arrival. We also had a tough start at the
hotel, but thankfully it’s all straightened out now.
Our guide, Veronica is very responsive and very nice. She’s been
a true gem already. Maile - she LOVED the photo album, and was
so happy and oohing and aahhing when she looked through the
pictures!
Now the important stuff: We leave the hotel at 9am tomorrow
morning ( 9pm Saturday night East Coast US time); we head to the
bank for our “donation” conversion, and then we get to meet
Ethan at the orphanage.
We did get the following updates: Ethan has not yet had any
medical procedures; also, he was taken from his foster home 2
weeks ago and sent to the orphanage in preparation for our
arrival. Sadly, this means a few things: this poor boy is
probably very confused about what is happening, and he’s
grieving the loss of his foster family in a completely strange
environment. It also means we will not be allowed to visit his
foster home or meet his foster family while here, further
aggravating his transition. The best we can do is take photos of
the orphanage and visit where he was found. But we expect that
tomorrow will be very hard on him – confusing, scary, sad.
We have a toy bag set up for him, and we have both a bed and a
crib ready for him so we’re prepared based on what he’s been
used to.
On the positive side, today’s rough start(s) have us all
completely exhausted. Emma and Gregg are already fast asleep,
and I just have a few more things to get ready. This means that
despite my highly emotional state right now (yes, I cried as we
went through the doors at the Beijing airport to meet our guide
– Emma got a kick out of that one), I’ll probably sleep very
well.
More tomorrow – and a big one it will be. Tomorrow we become a
family of 4…….
Take care, and please wish us luck
Love, Dawn, Gregg and Emma
