Today is Saturday, although I couldn’t tell you
the date. 31 hours of flying and countless hours
in airports in between have made time and date a
bit groggy…But China! She wakes you up! It is
beautiful here. Guangzhou airport is as modern
and architecturally impressive as any we have
seen. We had a traditional Chinese breakfast of
beef noodles. (See Roy’s photo) He has been a
trooper, even rejecting a fork for chopsticks.
He was a bit overwhelmed by the language
barrier, but I have gotten us by. The Chinese
people are so helpful and friendly, and love to
practice English. I feel strangely at home and
at ease here.
We made it to Beijing about 2 hours late, but
our guide, Kathy was waiting for us with a car
and a smile. Our hotel is modern and western.
And, in the lobby we met friends Lori and Phil
and their son Brady. We all went for Thai food
last night a gorgeous restaurant walking
distance from the hotel. The staff worked so
hard to make our experience lovely. They loved
our card that has the boy’s photo and an
explanation of the purpose of our trip written
in Chinese. It has been a wonderful way to
connect personally to people we meet along the
path of our journey.
My ankles were swollen like tree trunks and
began to cramp last night. I drank lots of water
and went to bed at 8pm while Roy decided to
“explore”. He must have delighted the locals as
he scored an hour massage for $9 US. This
morning we both feel great. We are off to the
Great Wall, Tian A Men square and the Summer
Palace. Some wait a lifetime to see these
wonders…I feel so blessed to be here.
