A
journey of a thousand miles begins with one single step…
Ni Hao from Beijing!!
We are officially world travelers! Our day started at the crack
of dawn at Tulsa International Airport. After an uneventful
flight to Newark we went straight to boarding our flight to
Beijing.
Cody was a champion traveler. That boy can sure make me smile.
He jazzed up the security checks with fuzzy mismatched socks. On
the flight to Beijing he entertained himself watching The
Simpsons, playing in-flight video games, and listening to his
IPod.
Mike watched movie after movie after movie. Luckily I had a
chance to catch up on celebrity gossip, play hours and hours of
Bookworm, and work a Suduku or two. (Or Soo-Kooky as Alice calls
it.)
The meals were great and Continental made the trip enjoyable.
That is not to say that we weren’t tickled pink when we finally
landed.
Landing in Beijing we were struck by just how HUGE everything
is. I do not have any sort of sense of direction whatsoever (you
can’t be gifted in all areas) and Mike kept my sanity and
navigated the airport. As we departed the baggage claim, we were
met by the cutest, perkiest, sweetest guide named Sarah.
The traffic here is very fluid. The painted lanes are merely
decorative as cars, buses, and bikes just flow where they want
to go. A lot of honking is happening but turn signals are
completely unnecessary. We are traveling in a big bus so it is
comforting to be the biggest thing on the road. Mike and I saw a
man calmly chugging away on his bike literally 12 inches from
the side of our bus.
Our hotel is the Novotel Peace Hotel. It is in an extremely
ritzy part in the heart of Beijing. Down the street there are
selling Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Aston Martins and other cars
that I can’t spell. We are not rich enough to know how to spell
such pricey cars, we can just spell Ford and VW.
We are now checked in our hotel and debating going to a
McDonalds down the street, but the beds are definitely calling
our names.
Tomorrow we have a jam-packed day. We will see Tian’anMen
Square, Forbidden City, a silk factory, a traditional Chinese
dwelling and an acrobatic show. We are exhausted but glad that
we have made it safely and are so much closer to Sarah.
Love from China,
Leanne, Mike and Cody
Excerpt from Cody’s journal:
Today is the best day ever. I can’t wait to get on the plane.
Plus I can’t wait to get to China.
* Sorry for the late update. Once our heads hit the pillow we
were down for the count.
