Today was our last full day on Shamian Island. This trip has
been quite a struggle for little Bella. While she still has a
lot to overcome physically, today we saw a side of Bella that we
had not yet seen . As we watch her, it is like watching a flower
literally open up before our eyes on a spring morning. Her walls
are beginning to come down. Today we saw smiles, giggles, hand
motions, verbal and nonverbal imitation, and many words. She was
counting, walking with help, and even waving to us. She is
really such a sweet, delicate little girl. I can hardly wait for
her to meet our other kiddos! She is going to love them so much!
We did a little shopping today, took some pictures, and spent
some time with some local friends and our travel mates. It is
amazing how quickly you become connected with other families who
are experiencing a huge life change at the same time. Our new
buddies, Missy, Dave and Mack Nicholson have been such a
blessing. We have spent time together and we have laughed
hysterically about funny things and even things that are not
really that funny. Adoption travel is a somewhat stressful time
(even though much of it is good stress) and it is so helpful to
connect with others who are in the midst of the same situation.
When you add in the key ingredient of being “like-minded” it is
the recipe for some really great memories and sweet friendships.
Tonight we said our goodbyes to them and I will admit it was a
tearful, bittersweet moment.
The great highlight of the day is that we received Bella’s visa
and passport. YAY! This is her admission into the best country
in the whole world. And upon admission, she will become a U.S.
citizen.
Tomorrow morning we head to the airport very early to begin the
first leg of our travels home. We will have a 24-hour layover in
Hong Kong and then we will continue to our trek home. |
