Ni Hao from Hong Kong! Our original flight out of St Louis on
Friday was cancelled due to a huge winter storm that swept
through the Midwest. We were frantic on Thursday trying to
figure out what to do. After a whole day of airline drama, we
ended up driving to Chicago Thursday night. The roads were
treacherous so we drove 40-45mph the whole way and arrived at
our Chicago hotel around 4:30am. What normally takes 5 hours
took us 8 1/2 hours. Our flight to Hong Kong was still on even
though Chicago was also in the midst of the same storm. We had
30 minutes of de-icing the plane but at least it wasn't
cancelled. The flight was smooth but VERY long (16 hours). Tim
slept the whole way and I (Julie), slept none. When we got off
the plane you could feel the humidity and smell the ocean. I
love that...my hair not so much! Hong Kong is very westernized
so the airport was easy to navigate. (To make a long history
lesson short, Hong Kong is not China. Since 1997, its not under
British control either, its actually both. This is why we must
go through immigrations again when we get to China tomorrow).
Everyone we encountered spoke English. It's amazing how many
people in the world can speak at least 2 languages but so many
Americans just know English. The hotel we are staying at us a 5
star hotel right inside the airport. So easy to get to and is
going to be so convenient tomorrow when we catch our connection
to Guangzhou. The lights are really the only thing different
here...you need your hotel key to turn them on. I've encountered
this before in other countries. Just one of those things us
Americans take for granted...electricity. I believe there will
be lots of those humbling moments on this trip.
Well, it's 2:30am in the morning here and I still can't
sleep...too much excitement!! The good news is that Tim still
has no problem sleeping!
Next stop...Guangzhou!!
