MEDICAL EXAM AND
SHOPPING IN GUANGZHOU
This morning we had Callie’s medical exam, and she couldn’t have
been more cooperative. She smilingly complied with everything
she was asked to do, and never even whimpered when the nurse
inserted the needle in her arm for the TB test. I was afraid
that being surrounded by screaming kids and doctors poking
around on he might upset her a bit, but she simply looked around
at the screaming kids and raised her eyebrows as if to say
“What’s THEIR problem?” We ran into many other adoptive families
while we were there, and were struck anew with the realization
that we have been very fortunate indeed with how easy Callie’s
transition has been thus far. I keep saying thus far because I’m
certain that at some point we will begin to see the effect that
the changes are having on her, she’s been through so many
changes over the past week that it is to be expected. But for
now we will enjoy her sunny and easygoing personality and just
be thankful that our time in China has been relatively stress
free.
After her exam we asked the guide to leave us on the island
instead of taking us back to the hotel, and we spent a relaxing
day shopping and just hanging out. Maili had a much better day
today and she and Callie have really enjoyed each other’s
company. I’m beginning to think that a lot of her recent
behavior may be related to her being overtired ; all day she
seemed back to her normal, happy self until late in the
afternoon when it was past naptime. Suddenly she kicked into
hyperactive overdrive and became very whiny and disobedient,
almost as if a switch had been flipped, the difference was so
great. So we headed back to the hotel for both girls to take a
nap, where they laid down and were both sound asleep in less
than 5 minutes. They are so cute when they sleep because when I
go into the room they are always snuggled together like puppies.
Maili went through a stage right before we traveled where she
was afraid to go to sleep by herself and would make us leave the
lights on or lie with her until she fell asleep. Since we have
been in China she has gone to bed willingly and gone to sleep
immediately, never far from Callie and always touching here in
some way. I had been concerned that they might keep each other
awake talking, but I guess there are a few advantages to the
fact that they don’ t speak the same language. |
